Our Model Volcano

Year 3 made their own models of volcanos in class. They used flour, salt, oil and water to make a dough. The dough was moulded around an empty, open, drinks bottle. Sodium bicarbonate, red food colouring and vinegar made the explosive , frothing ‘lava’. If you are going to try this at home, check with your parents first. You will need a tray to build your model in and it will also stop the flowing liquid from staining any furniture!

Rocks and Soils

Hello Year 3,

This week we are learning about how rocks are formed. Watch this videos to remind yourself of how a volcano erupts to release lava. Lava is very hot liquid rock which cools on the earth’s surface to form solid rock. If it cools slowly it forms large crystals inside it. If it cools fast, it forms small crystals. The solid cool rocks around us were formed millions of years ago when the Earth was formed and as it cooled down. They are all different because of the different minerals inside them and the amount of heat and pressure they have had to endure over millions of years.

Homework : In class we will be making a model of a volcano so remember to bring in your small plastic bottle!

Are your teeth shiny?

Homework task

Due in Friday 7th December 2007

Well done Year 3 for the tests you performed in class this week. Your homework is to write a method for what you did.
Remember this is your first draft. We will check it and redraft it in school. Well done!

Best Buys

Which one do shoppers prefer?

We can look at the comparison that a consumer magazine did and see if their results matched ours!

Which paper is the most absorbent?

bountyDisneyThirst pockets

This week you will design an investigation to test which of our favourite brands of kitchen paper towels soaks up most water. You will work in pairs and try and make a FAIR test on all four different paper towels.

Think about :
What will you do?
What will you measure?
How will you compare the results to decide which was the best paper towel?

Strong Materials

As you know we are investigating the properties of materials in class. So far we have looked at materials which are absorbent or waterproof. We have also looked at materials which are soft or hard, flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque and biodegradable or non biodegradable.

From our talk last week on Plastics we discovered that plastics are very useful because they can be made to be rigid or flexible, transparent or opaque, hard or soft. The only problem with plastics is that most of them are non biodegradable!

This week we are going to investigate the STRENGTH of a material.

Making a Bridge Strong

We are going to try and make a bridge in class from a choice of various materials. we will then test to see which bridge was the strongest and why?

Properties of Materials

Welcome to year 3 on the blog ( short for Web Log ) ! At school we have begun to look at the properties of materials. If you go on to this site you will learn about the characteristics of materials. A characteristic is another word for property:it describes the material according to what it can or cannot do. For example, is it flexible or rigid? Is it transparent or opaque? Is it waterproof or absorbent? Does it reflect or is it dull? Is it soft or brittle? Go on to this site to learn more about materials. In the activity you can test the materials as we will be testing in class and then take the quiz to check how good you are. Good Luck!
