W.A.L.T : To make a fact file on a gas .
Watch this video and see if you can spot some fun uses of gases.
Choose ANY gas and make a one page A4 size FACT FILE . You can use the sheets I have given you to research the gas as well as books and the internet. Include the uses and any special points about the gas. When was it discovered? Does it have a chemical formula or symbol? Is it coloured or colourless? Does it have a smell? Is it toxic?
Bring it in to your next lesson on Tuesday.

Year 5 HW 17/09/09
You have been given two information sheets about the uses of various gases. Use the information sheets to find the uses for all the gases found in air.
Write them down in the HW sheet given.
Due in: Thursday 24th September.
Air

Earth is a very special planet which has layers of atmosphere containing friendly gases. The gas particles cannot escape the atmosphere due to the gravitational pull on air toward Earth.
Air is made up of a MIXTURE of gases. These are listed below.

We can draw a PIE CHART showing the approximate amounts of each gas in air.

States of Matter
Hi Year 5 and welcome back!
We have begun our exciting new topic of States of Matter . Just to remind ourselves, there are 3 states of matter, solid, liquid and gas. Each state has it’s own properties: for instance solids can’t be poured and keep their shape whilst gases and liquids flow very easily. The properties depend on the arrangement of the tiny particles inside each substance.

If you click here you can visit a cool site which explains all this in more detail.
If you want to understand more about The Particle Model of substances, then visit this bbc site for finding out more. CLICK HERE FOR BBC SITE.
You can also watch a super ANIMATION of the particles by clicking here.

Making an Ice Bowl

You need:
2 round cereal bowls, one smaller than the other
some water
a freezer
Method:
Place both bowls on a tray or in the sink to catch any water which spills.
Pour some drinking water into the larger bowl until it is half full.
Carefully place the smaller bowl inside the larger bowl.
Some of the water will spill out and the rest will form a thin layer between the two bowls.
Place both bowls in the freezer overnight.
In the morning remove the bowls from the freezer.
Put the bowls upside down on a plate and lift off the larger bowl.
Turn the ice bowl and the smaller bowl over and now lift out the smaller bowl.
You should be left with the ice bowl! Enjoy your ice cream dessert in it!

Topic 2: Changing State
The WATER CYCLE
If you can identify all the changes of state occurring in this picture of the water cycle, you know almost everything already!

The only other information you really need is about the particles in solids liquids and gases. How does the arrangement of these particles give the different substances their particular characteristics? Click on the image below to help you revise.
The STRUCTURE of solids, liquids and gases.

Condensation
When a gas or vapour is cooled the particles lose their energy. They move slower and tend to stick to each other, until they change state and form a liquid.
Gas———————————————————————————> Liquid
cooling leads to condensation
Below are all examples of condensation around us. Can you think of some more? (Hint: breathing on a cold mirror; Hint: breathing on a cold frosty morning)

A Brilliant Example of Change of State in Nature
Lava, very hot molten rock from below the Earth’s crust, is flowing into the ocean. The thermal energy is transferred from the lava to the water; this makes the water boil and form steam( a bit more exciting than using a bunsen burner to boil water in the science lesson!).
The lava cools on the surface , losing its thermal energy to the surrounding air and solidifies again as a black rock. The lava also cools and solidifies under the water.
So we have here: melting (solid rock to liquid lava)
boiling or evaporation (liquid water to steam)
solidifying or freezing( liquid lava changing back to solid rock)
Have you spotted which change of state is missing? Unscramble this anagram to work out the answer : scantidioneon ( changing vapour or gas back into a liquid)

Burning Candles

I absolutely adore watching a candle burning; I can look into the flame for hours captivated by its flickering luminescence. Have you ever wondered about the science behind this simple, magical phenomenon?
When a candle burns, many changes occur. Some of these are REVERSIBLE and some are IRREVERSIBLE.
Reversible Changes( Physical changes)
There is a change of state .The particles in the solid wax are normally arranged in a fixed pattern. As they get extra heat ( thermal) energy from the flame, they begin to vibrate with greater movement( kinetic) energy until they break free from their normal positions and begin to move more freely. They now have more energy than before and move about randomly , often colliding with each other. We describe this physical change as MELTING. It is a reversible change: when the flame is extinguished, the molten , liquid wax begins to cool down. The particles become more sluggish in their movement, and eventually get fixed close to each other again. Basically the liquid wax becomes a solid again.
Click here to see how the particles are in different states of matter.
Melting Ice Cubes

Jogging our memories
In today’s experiment we compared two similar ice blocks and how they melted: one ice block had salt sprinkled on it and one was left to melt naturally .
We also took the temperature of melting ice: one beaker had ice with added salt and the other beaker had pure ice.
In all four cases, the ice melted because it absorbed thermal energy from the surroundings.
Homework Task:( Due next Wednesday)
LO: How does adding salt effect the melting point of ice?
1. Draw two DIAGRAMS showing the ice blocks with and without salt at the beginning of the experiment.
2. Draw two DIAGRAMS showing the same ice blocks after half an hour at room temperature.
3. Write a METHOD explaining how the experiment was set up. Remember to include how we made the experiment fair (size, location, temperature of surroundings, observation time)
4. Write your OBSERVATIONS describing what you saw.
5.Write a CONCLUSION in which you say how adding salt effects the way ice melts. What happens to the melting point of ice? Does it change how fast or slowly the ice melts?
Remember to put a date on your sheet and the LO as the title.
When you have finished your HW, enjoy the video. Perhaps you could try this for yourself at home!

Your website is fabarooney!
Hello Year 5,
Leave me a comment if you have managed to get so far!
Farida Mannan
i love your website! and yes you are geting ahead of Mr Hitchen! maybe you could install a podcast about ‘the green girls’ just for those who need more information.
see you soon Cara
I love the website and i think when you get more into the website you should put our homework on it and you should make a game about being green. Also i agree with cara you should make a pod cast about being a green girl.
I love your website, it has lots of exciting movies and clips. It would win a gold award! See you tomorrow, Emma
Thanks Green Girls. We make a great team! See you soon.
Farida Mannan
Hi Mrs Mannan I love your website it’s fab! maybe when you put more on it you might be able to put our homework on it aswell.I also agree with India you should put a game on it about bieng a green girl and you should tell us and people about what happened when Mr Heath came.Well lovley to talk bye!
Lara , thanks for your great comments. I am really glad that you are using it. I will find a good recycling game for you guys soon. As for Mr Heath’s visit, you can read all about it on the Home Page and also on the ‘protected” Plastics page.Good Luck!
Farida Mannan
I’m liking the water and pepper trick, this blog is growing up to be better than Mr Hitchen’s.
I think the washing up liquid repelled the pepper surface, because it creates a new surface. I’ve just tried it, it works, but you get pepper all over your fingers.
Emma B, year 5
Hi Mrs Mannan,
I love your website. What do you think of including a podcast?
I agree with the rest of the “Green Girls” that there should be a game that shows you how to be green. Keep it going.
From,
Charlotte
Hi Charlotte, Try the World Recycling Games on Year 5 which do teach you about being Green! Thanks for your great comments!
Farida Mannan
Hi Emma,
The pepper trick is all to do with surface tension and how the washing up liquid effects it. see if you can find out how any washing up liquid works.
Farida Mannan
hi Mrs Mannan
i love the pepper trick.
it works so well
intelejence! thats all you have and a big peice of it too! please may you now
trie a small science experiment if you want me to then ill give a little speech of it in class. Oh! by the way i think your website is the best idea that has ever come to the school!
seeya! Tom/cara
Brilliant games! I think the whole school should be getting more involved in this blog.
I’ve tried the pepper trick and it works! Now I’m going to try and find out why it does that. Oh, if you carry on creating more things on your blog, you’ll be better than Mr Hitchen! Also, the barnaby bear game is really good, I know you think it it for babies but put it on the year 5 site too please. I also agree with Lara, India and anyone else, that you should put on a game about being a green girl. The games are fantastic! Lovely to chat, see you soon Sophie
OK,OK,OK! You win!!
Play the Barnaby game and enjoy!
Farida Mannan
Yey! Barnaby bear! Ha Ha Ha!
Cute! Charlotte
thanks for putting barnaby game on its great
hi mrs Mannan! maybe you could put a voki on your website so it could maybe be a fact teller! You could also make it say a few scientific jokes! ha!
buy! from cara!
Good idea. I am working on it.
barnaby bear yeah! ha, ha, ha!
GOOOOOOOO! Barnaby!!!!!!!!!!
Mrs Mannan I tried the penguin game on year4 you should put it on our year!
Mrs Mannan I tried the pepper trick It didnt work.
Now now Mrs Mannsn don’t take it all out on the others! They’re only BARNABY lovers!
Sorry have to go -Mum said 007 is waiting for me to attend to secret mission of some sort! YOU DO KNOW MY TRUE IDENTITY IS 009!!!!!!!!!
luck on the website EMMA
HA HA HA emma very funny. And i’m not a BARNBY LOVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(p.s sorry about all the exclamation marks
hi miss mannan!
i have a poster that i could bring in next wednesday, but unfortunatly it does not have the autobelt. Does it matter if me and emmas work is the same?
Hi Cara,
http://www.solstation.com/stars/asteroid.htm
Try this link for the asteroid belt. Emma and you have to share the work as you both wanted to research uranus. I would like you to do the picture for the planet and for Emma to do the writing, so that won’t be the same. Then, I would like Emma to draw the asteroid belt and for you to do the writing for it.
I think that is quite fair.
Mrs Mannan
Hi Mrs Mannan,
I’m really happy about my planet, Jupiter. I’ve already collected quite a lot of facts and I’m doing my model of Jupiter. This is CCCCCCCCCCCCCCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
( P.S. Sorry, I like doing that)
P.P.S I’ve got a solar system poster at home. Maybe I could bring it in?
only the year six page requires a password, but [password removed - Yasmin, please don't tell others the password!] doesnt work.
can you please try to fix it [it wasn't broken!] or take away the password???
I hope the test goes well…
Good Luck Every one!
Mrs Mannan
